The Bible establishes the neighbor as a sacred relationship with great responsibilities toward our neighbor's welfare. And, of course, the Jews of Jesus' day went to great lengths to limit the definition of a neighbor as we are tempted to do.
In the story of the Good Samaritan, Jesus, however, expanded who a neighbor is to include the despised (as Samaritans were) and anyone who needs help (as the beaten man beside the road was).
