Disarming the Church

For 400 years (until Augustine), the Church believed that, when Jesus told Peter to put down his weapon on the night of his arrest, he disarmed all Christians for all time.

There is nothing Christian about owning a gun, using violence to defend oneself betrays our lack of faith in the One who will one day raise all the dead.

Why?

God Bless America?

It would have added 14¢ to the cost of a Papa Johns' pizza to insure his employees and help make sure sick people aren't handling our food. The CEO of McDonalds makes $15,000,000 a year while paying his employees minimum wage. Walmart's owners are some of the wealthiest people in America, but over a hundred people died in a factory with no fire exits because they were too cheap to pay for fire prevention.

God bless America? No...if you believe the Bible, you understand God is not a respecter of persons and God will judge America for its treatment of the "least of these."

Just saying...

Instead of working to put "Christ" back in "Christmas," we should be working to put the teachings of Jesus back into Christianity. (1 Cor 2:2)

The Antichrist

John who traditionally wrote the Gospel, 3 Epistles, & Revelation is the only biblical writer to use the word "antichrist" and did not use it in the book of Revelation at all.

John identified Antichrist as a spirit who was already present at the time. The word itself (anti), in the Greek, meant "against" as it does in English, but also meant "instead of" or a "substitute for."

We see this spirit for the 1st time when the Israelites forced Aaron to make the Golden Calf (Ba'al) and he called it "Yahweh" and in modern times when Conservative "Christians" call Mammon, "Jesus."

We see antichrist at work when people claiming to be Christians (Christ-like) substitute teachings of prosperity, selfishness, & easy believeism for counting the cost and picking up the cross of self-sacrifice to live in imitation of Jesus.

The spirit of antichrist is not necessarily "the Beast" of Revelation. As to the "rapture," that is a new doctrine dating back to the 1830s and John Darby and not part of traditional Christianity.

Merry Christmas!

On the one hand, there's nothing Christian in the origins of Christ's Mass (where the name came from), it was an attempt to put a Jesus Halloween mask on a pagan holiday in the same way that the Conservative Jesus is simply Mammon dressed in a Jesus mask.

Jesus never celebrated his birthday, it wasn't Jewish or Christian custom to celebrate birthdays until after 400 AD.

I once asked God why he allows pagan holidays to be celebrated in his name. He answered, "You know what you know, but don't hurt my children." If took months for him to impress on me that, "There will be no pop quiz on doctrine at the Judgement Seat." It isn't what you know that matters, it's what you do.

And Christmas brings out the best in some people and the worse in others. It brings out the greed in some, and provides others an opportunity for their charitable hearts to find expression. So, I say, for those who use the season to feed the poor, comfort the sick, quench the thirsty, visit the imprisoned (Matt 25:31-46), Merry Christmas! And may THAT spirit of Christmas last throughout the year.

The Good News

As Republicans come out of the Fox News, Glenn Beck, and Rush Limbaugh fog of propaganda, they have been discovering that America really doesn't like them very much. America has rejected the racism, misogyny, and greed that has become synonymous with Conservatism. While, I don't pretend to offer any advice to secular Republicans (if there are any), I do know how Conservative Christians can appeal to more people.

And that is simply to start living the teachings of Jesus Himself as expounded in the verses of the Bible that appear in Red (1Cor 2:1-5). Abortion existed well before the New Testament, but Jesus never mentioned it. Considering the time, the Centurion's "servant" was probably his gay lover, but Jesus never condemned him. When Paul preached to the Pagans on Mars hill, he didn't claim their religion bred terrorists.

The Good News of Christianity is not preached by picketing abortion clinics, it's not preached by collecting signatures to prevent gays from marrying. The Good News of Christianity is the person, life, and teaching of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, and Him crucified.

Sick, sick, sick...

I am glad restaurant owners are coming out in their hatred of their workers and refusal to provide healthcare FOR FOOD SERVICE WORKERS...because you just know these same owners (Applebees, Denny's, Jimmy Johns, Papa Johns, Olive Garden, etc.) would gladly give us ecoli while laughing all the way to the bank to save a few pennies and besides, I'd rather know where to avoid having my lunch served by someone carrying the next pandemic.

Matthew 7:2-5

A Liberal/Progressive Christian is actually more obsessed with sin than a Conservative, the difference being is the Liberal is obsessed with his own while the Conservative is obsessed with the sins of others.

MATTHEW 7:2-5 CEV

God will be as hard on you as you are on others! He will treat you exactly as you treat them.
You can see the speck in your friend's eye, but you don't notice the log in your own eye. How can you say, “My friend, let me take the speck out of your eye,” when you don't see the log in your own eye? You're nothing but show-offs! First, take the log out of your own eye; then you can see how to take the speck out of your friend's eye.

The State of the Church

The current state of the Church mirrors the Laodicean Church described in Revelation 3:14-22 with its emphasis on and worship of money. The "Jesus" of contemporary Christianity is simply Mammon (god of Money) dressed up in finery and wearing a Halloween mask.

Like Jesus Himself, those of us who endeavor to be authentic Christians (meaning "like Christ") are standing outside the Church and knocking.

Christians don't belong in politics

Jerry Falwell once preached that Christians should stay out of politics, not long after he changed his mind when President Carter threatened to remove tax exemption for White's Only Christian Schools. After awhile, Falwell realized there was more contributions to be had fighting abortion.

I tend to agree. Not that Christians shouldn't care about politics and vote their conscience, but the Right went too far and wedded Christ to harlots, the Republican Party (it would have been just as bad had the Left done the same thing to the Democratic Party).

By calling, I am what various denominations would call an intercessor, a Christian Mystic, a Habakkuk, if you will. One who's greatest ambition is to sit alone in my metaphoric watchtower with one eye on the news and the other focused on Heaven to "see what He will say," but became distressed that God's Name was being blasphemed by associating it with the Republican Party so I got off my knees and added my voice to those risen in protest in the wilderness.

Ditto

What do our opponents mean when they apply to us the label “Liberal?” If by “Liberal” they mean, as they want people to believe, someone who is soft in his policies abroad, who is against local government, and who is unconcerned with the taxpayer’s dollar, then the record of this party and its members demonstrate that we are not that kind of “Liberal.” But if by a “Liberal” they mean someone who looks ahead and not behind, someone who welcomes new ideas without rigid reactions, someone who cares about the welfare of the people —their health, their housing, their schools, their jobs, their civil rights, and their civil liberties —someone who believes we can break through the stalemate and suspicions that grip us in our policies abroad, if that is what they mean by a “Liberal,” then I’m proud to say I’m a “Liberal.” -JFK

To Republicans, You Matter Only to the Extent You Matter to the Bottom Line

“Republicans approve of the American farmer —but they are willing to help him go broke. They stand four-square for the American home —but not for housing. They are strong for labor —but they are stronger for restricting labor’s rights. They favor minimum wage —the smaller the minimum wage, the better. They endorse educational opportunity for all —but they won’t spend money for teachers or for schools. They think modern medical care and hospitals are fine —for people who can afford them. They consider electrical power a great blessing —but only when the private power companies get their rake-off. They think American standard of living is a fine thing —so long as it doesn’t spread to all the people. And they admire the Government of the United States so much that they would like to buy it.” —Harry S. Truman

True Meaning of "Christian"

Have come to the conclusion after much thought (tend to be slow that way) that "Christian" is intended to be a synonym for "generous" and "Christianity" a synonym for "generosity" in keeping with Matt 25.

We are told to be content with enough for today, told not to accumulate treasure here on earth, and to give to those who need.

Thursday, June 14, 2012

Let not God speak with us, lest we die.

Republican Christians are like the Israelies when Moses came down from the mount (Exodus 20:18_21). They were afraid so they asked that God not speak to them directly, but rather He speak to Moses who could tell them what He said.

For all their talk about the Bible, Republicans rarely read it outside of proof texts and printed "Bible studies" and, rather, expect their preachers to read the Bible and tell them what it says. Unfortunately, too many of these preachers have been hirelings with an agenda and have twisted the message to their profit and their flock's loss.

Faith, Politics and the Undocumented: Can the Bible Inform the Illegal Immigration Debate? - The Huffington Post

So-called Christians in Bible-belt states are quick to refer to Leviticus when seeking to pass laws forbidding gays from marrying, but are even faster to ignore it when dealing with "illegal immigrants" (a status unheard of in the Bible).

But the stranger that dwelleth with you shall be unto you as one born among you, and thou shalt love him as thyself; for ye were strangers in the land of Egypt: I am the LORD your God.-Leviticus 19:34

The Root of All Evil

Conservative Christianity is primarily the teaching that Jesus taught that the "root of all evil" (1Tim. 6:10) was a virtue.

Wealth is a test that few pass, which is why it is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for a wealthy person to be saved. And why the wealthy man (and anyone) was advised to give his wealth to the poor (Matt 19:21).

Love of money finds its ultimate expression in American capitalism. Which is why the first church chose Socialism (Acts 2:44). See also: SOCIALISM...What is it? IS IT CHRISTIAN ? SHOULD THE CHURCH TAKE ANY INTEREST IN IT? By REV. J. E. SCOTT http://songbookz-wilderness.blogspot.com/2010/02/socialismwhat-is-it-is-it-christian.html?m=0

Through such teaching and others that are the exact opposite of what Jesus taught, Conservative Christianity can be identified as not Christian but belonging to the spirit of "antichrist" (1John 4:3). Indeed, I believe Conservative Religion to be the "false prophet" serving Antichrist (Rev 16:12-14).

Two Laws

Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets." (Matthew 22:34-40 KJV)

A hundred years before Jesus, Rabbi Hillel said the same thing. Hillel was asked if he could teach the Law while standing on one foot, so he raised one foot and said, "Love God with all your heart, mind and soul, and love your neighbor as yourself. The rest is commentary.

The Law was written similar to the way law codes are written now: there are really two laws:
1. Love God
2. Love Neighbor

Beneath those laws are 10 sub-sections:
A. No idols
B. Do not murder, etc.

And beneath those are specific laws intended as examples of what love God & neighbor look like (Col 2:16-17).

Jesus "fulfilled" the Law, which is not the same as ended just as "inspired" does not mean God dictated the Bible to human secretaries who transcribed it inerrantly. The two laws will never end until love ends (1 Cor 13:8) - but what love means changes as culture changes so that it might not be necessary to get our neighbors ox out of a ditch (Ex 23:4-5), but he might need us to help pull his car out.

Everyone wants to go to heaven but no one wants to die to get there

See How Quickly "Stand Your Ground" Spread Nationwide | Mother Jones

While we certainly have a right to defend ourselves, doing so is completely incompatible with Christianity if you define Christianity as following the teachings of Jesus Christ who told us to bless our enemies, turn the other cheek, and give up our cloak if demanded. Arming ourselves betrays our lack of faith as we are placing our trust in ourselves, guns and "stand your ground laws" instead of God Almighty.

God alone is our protector, avenger, and, should we be killed, has arranged an eternity better than anything this life has to offer.

Our Paper God

The Bible mentions our (nation, church & individual) responsibility to the poor in over a 1000 verses. God allowed Israel to be destroyed and Judah captured because they neglected and exploited the poor.

God has told me before that the day is coming and soon when, to be called an American, will no longer make one proud, but will be considered "fighting words." The highest of insults.

Do we really think that our greed, that exceeds all greed in the history of man, will be rewarded when Israel and Judah met such fates? America had such promise, the ability, on its own to feed the word, but it abandoned God for a god made of paper, See! Right there on their paper god is written, "In God We Trust." America placed its faith in the wrong god...for soon, the world will be using its paper god to light their stoves. And God, the God of Creation will be defamed no more.

Jesus was not a Liberal

The phrase is slightly off, a "Liberal" is a political party and, while Jesus was certainly liberal in everything he did, I doubt he would have become "unequally yoked" (2 Cor 6:4) with a political party. For the same reason, while I vote Democrat and am politically Left of the Democratic Party, I am a democrat, but not a Democrat.

Beyond a Reasonable Doubt?

I'm not against the death penalty, I'm against the way we impose it. The Bible required a minimum of two eye-witnesses who themselves faced the same penalty as the accused if they were found to have lied. IOW a standard of "beyond any doubt" as opposed to our standard of "beyond a reasonable doubt."

Just a couple of days ago an Occupier's case was tossed because the police officer lied and the article mentioned that police officers have "qualified immunity" when they lie. The day before that, there was an article about prosecutors hiding exonerating evidence from the defense and how difficult it is to prosecute or punish them for malicious prosecution. Within the past few days, it's been proven that Texas has recently executed two innocent men and Georgia has likely executed an innocent man just a few months ago. In addition at least 2000 people have been exonerated after being falsely convicted, according to another article - a bunch of them here in Illinois. Recent studies also show that White juries tend to convict Black men whether they did it or not.

All Hell Is About To Hit The Fan

If you read the prophetic books of the Bible, God destroyed Israel & allowed Judah to be taken into slavery because of idolatry and exploiting the poor (they tend to go together). Not everyone was, God told Ezekiel, that, out of a 6 million member "church", 7000 remained faithful (probably a similar percentage today).

The Bible calls the poor "God's people." When the wealthy "redistribute" the combined wealth of the poor into their own coffers, in God's name, no less, as the "Christian Right" has encouraged, and presume to sully God's name further by identifying themselves as a "Christian Nation," all hell is going to hit the fan.

Liberty

I have served my country - thankfully, most of it in peace time, and feel my 8 1/2 years in the USAF have earned me the right to express my opinion. And not just me, we all served that everyone may have Liberty to even say the moronic Conservative bullshit that pisses me off.

I am a liberal because I was and am prepared to die that others may have Liberty. I am a liberal because I am a follower of Jesus Christ of Nazareth who taught that we should love God, love our neighbor, feed the poor, give drink to the thirsty, heal the sick freely, not cast the first stone, and to stand up and defend the oppressed (bruised).

Jesus did not say that corporations were people (yes they existed), money is speech, that He would bless his followers with wealth, or the uninsured should do us a favor and die quickly.

Pro-choice/anti-abortion

I am pro-choice/anti-abortion believing that we will have less abortions when we have better access to health care, health information and birth control, when we have jobs that pay enough for women (and men) to support a family -but I would never presume to attempt to legislate my morality onto a pregnant woman.

Preferring instead to retain my stone and acknowledge that I to am a sinner

The Poor, Whose Responsibility?

Our responsibly to feed the poor is a constant refrain in both testaments of the Bible (and in the scriptures of most other religions as well), appearing in more than a thousand verses. The Bible tells us that the governments' failure to provide for the poor led to God allowing Isreal to be destroyed and Judah led into captivity.

The tithe was eaten by the farmer and his family and then shared with strangers (with a small portion given to the priests). Farmers (business) were to leave the corners of their fields unharvested and fallowed every seven years so the poor could

Jesus and Paul reiterated the Church's and individual's responsibility for the poor and the apostles reminded Paul
(Galatians 2:10) that helping the poor was essential doctrine.

Certainly, the poor should be willing to work (a verse that is often interpreted to contradict the entire rest of the Bible), but in a Capitalist society, full employment is a statistical impossiblilty.

How Christians Became Such Greedy Bastards

There's an entry in Vine's Expository Dictionary of New Testament Words under the entey "Cross" that explains how pagan symbols became accepted as Christian. With the sudden adoption of Christianity as the official state religion, there were suddenly to many converts to teach properly and the Church was overwhelmed.

During the Reagan years, multi-level marketers discovered churches as a source of customers and prospective sales associates and joined in such numbers that the Church was over whelmed and soon abandoned Christ in favor of worshipping Mammon newly decked out in a Jesus Halloween mask.

Motes and Beams

Even if you believe homosexuality, abortion, birth control, etc., to be sins, then the correct Christian response is to avoid doing them. It is not to work to pass laws to force sinners not to sin. It would be like asking the scorpion not to sting you as you carried him across the river. Nor is it to stand around on a street corner saying "Thank God I never had an abortion like that poor rape victim over there who is saying, ' God be merciful to me a sinner'" Pointing out the mote in her eye while praying no one notices the beam in yours. Energy Report: Obama Goes On Offense About Gas Prices, Reliance On Foreign Oil

There are 2 things we can do to immediately see the price of gas drop:

1. Ban the export of US oil - we're drilling more oil than ever but it's being shipped to the same places Republicans shipped our manufacturing jobs.

2. Require positions in oil futures be held a minimum of 30 days to discourage speculation and encourage those with a legitimate interest in oil futures (airlines, FedEx, etc.) to hold purchase and hold them.

House Republicans Struggle To Piece Budget Together

Boehner and the Republican Liar's Club are still beating the same dead horse. They took over the House in 2010 promising to create jobs and have done nothing since but obstruct and try to legislate America's bedrooms. Oh, and try to pad Boehner's bank account by pushing through the Canada-2-China oil pipeline. Poll after poll has shown that, while the deficit is a concern, Americans care more about jobs - but the Republicans could care less what Americans care about.

His Hands

Some time ago my wife and I were out shopping. As we got in the car to go home, I saw a vision, plain as day, in front of me of a thrift store across town. When we got there we wandered around and found nothing of interest .. except .. this man with really greasy clothes hanging around in the book section.

Turns out he was new to town, had a job, but hadn't received his 1st paycheck and had nothing to eat. We were priviledged to walk him across to MacDonalds and buy him a meal with the last of of our money.

Did I say, "Our money?" As a Christian I own nothing but am simply God's hand to pass his things on to those in need.

If He Will Not Work

Acts 2:44-45 And all that believed were together, and had all things common; And sold their possessions and goods, and parted them to all men, as every man had need.

The first church, the one led by
the people who lived and ate and slept and traveled - if they had toothbrushes then they would have brushed their teeth together - with Jesus were Socialists. And... If they were Socialists, today's Christians should be Socialists.

The Bible did impose wage and labor regulations:

Leviticus 19:13 Thou shalt not defraud thy neighbour, neither rob him: the wages of him that is hired shall not abide with thee all night until the morning:

And business regulations:
Leviticus 19:35-36 Ye shall do no unrighteousness in judgment, in meteyard, in weight, or in measure.
Just balances, just weights, a just ephah, and a just hin, shall ye have: I am the LORD your God, which brought you out of the land of Egypt.

Socialism is the marriage of "Love thy neighbor" (Matt. 22:39) and "if any would not work, neither should he eat." (2Thes. 3:10) Welfare has several purposes. Capitalism is incapable of providing full employment, leaving a certain number of people jobless & willing to undercut the wages of those with jobs. Welfare provides wage stability and mitigates Capitalism's failures by paying people not to work. Socialism doesn't pay people not to work, but it doesn't let people starve either, it makes sure everyone has a job and that everyone shares in the rewards of their work.

The Battle Over School Prayer and Why It Matters

I remember as a lad in 3rd grade in a country public school in Alabama (no kindergarten, 1&2 grades had a new building, 3rd through 12th shared a building) that we had to recite the Pledge of Allegiance and say a teacher led prayer every morning. I also remember also, that we had a little girl in our class whose parents were Jehovah's Witnesses and was not allowed to participate, something the teacher pointed out ... every ... single ... morning (as in, everyone but (can't remember her name) stand and...) she was harassed and teased mercilessly. And at how horrified I was at the way she was treated (even as the oldest grandson of a Southern Baptist preacher).

There is a lot wrong with public prayer in school - one can still pray the Biblically required privately, as a lot of prayers go up privately right before unstudied-for tests in every school in the country. I'm sure Baptists don't want their kids praying Catholic style prayers in majority Catholic communities, Catholics don't want their kids praying to Allah in Dearborn, & Muslims don't want their kids praying prayers led by Baptists in Protestant majority schools, etc.

God was not served in my 3rd grade class, nor would he be served by compelling kids to pray prayers they disagree with or in formats they disagree with today.

What Does The Book Of Revelation Really Mean?

Revelation is the record of a vision received by a Christian mystic during a time when Christians were experiencing great persecution. As a vision, it is symbolic, as a writing during persecution, it is written to obscure it's criticism of the persecutors. Some of the symbols are obvious, like the "mark of the beast" which referred to a requirement that everyone bow down and worship Caesar and those who did were giving a document attesting to their act - these documents were sold to people who couldn't worship Caesar (Christians and Jews), so they could "prove" they had and avoid the penalties.

Revelation makes little sense to us during pleasant times, but time and again, has provided comfort during the hard times of history. As a symbolic document, Revelation can be, and has been, re-interpreted to provide comfort to the persecuted in every age. It was written, not for the pseudo-persecuted, the American Conservative who complains of persecution if someone says, "Happy Holidays," instead of "Merry Christmas," but to Christians like those in North Korea, China, Indonesia, and the Middle East who are today giving their lives and freedom for their beliefs.
